VLA Health Information Round Table (HIRT) Book Club
November 20, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
The Health Information Round Table (HIRT) is starting a book club! We’ll be kicking off the club by reading The Emperor of all Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee. Mukherjee, a physician and oncologist, wrote the book in response to a demand made by a patient, ‘I’m willing to fight on, but I need to know what it is I’m battling.’ Gilbert Cruz of Time magazine said that ‘It is also one of the best-written, most accessible, most relevant science books ever penned.’ And we are looking forward to reading it as a group.
This is an open invitation to everyone who is interested in reading the book and having a vibrant discussion about it. That conversation will happen on Friday, November 20th at 1 pm at the restaurant-side of Two Brothers Tavern in Middlebury. What better way to discuss a book than over lunch and with good company. When the date gets closer, we will put out a RSVP request so that we can give the restaurant an accurate head count. So keep your eyes posted. In the meantime, join our Facebook group and start the discussion online.
Furthermore, Ken Burns turned Mukherjee’s book into a three-episode documentary titled Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies that aired recently on PBS. These episodes stream online at PBS.org and Netflix. And as an added bonus, Ken Burns will be giving a talk at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland on Saturday Nov 21st from 7-9 pm on the shared American experience as part of Project 240, a collaboration between the Paramount Theater and Castleton University.
