Vermont Library Association Government Relations and Advocacy Committee
The Vermont Library Association (VLA) Government Relations and Advocacy Committee works to promote communication about library-related legislation, and provide opportunities and information for libraries of all sizes to advocate and promote within their communities and beyond. Our mission is twofold:
- To create a greater awareness among our legislators at the state and national levels about the critical role that Vermont libraries play in access to information and to life-long learning resources and programs.
- To help library staff learn to advocate for and promote libraries so as to better respond to and anticipate community needs.
Our responsibilities include preparation of the annual legislative agenda for VLA’s Executive Board and relevant committees, planning and implementing Library Legislative Day at the Vermont State Capitol, providing ongoing support of library advocacy efforts throughout Vermont, and submitting nominations to VLA’s Scholarship and Awards Committee for the Senator Patrick Leahy Library Advocate of the Year Award.
