Position description: Marlboro College seeks an experienced, creative leader with a passion for service and a clear vision of the library’s central mission to “support student learning, faculty teaching, and student and faculty research” to become College Librarian and Director of the Rice-Aron Library. The successful candidate will lead the library in improving information literacy and will have opportunities to develop, articulate, and enact a clear strategic plan to promote the library’s role in teaching and learning.
The College Librarian and Director

• articulates and supports the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the library and the College

• provides leadership for all library operations including budget, personnel, instruction, technology, and facilities
• promotes the role of the library and librarians in curricular planning
• contributes to outreach, promoting the college’s relationship to other academic and public libraries across the state
• participates in information literacy instruction and collaborative planning

• represents the needs, mission, and interests of the Marlboro community.
The Librarian holds a faculty position and reports to the Dean of the Faculty. Marlboro College offers a salary commensurate with responsibility and experience. Anticipated starting date is June 2008. The College Librarian is responsible for managing the library budget and leads a staff of 2 professional librarians, one support staff person, and 5 student assistants.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited graduate degree or international equivalent.

• An understanding of the central role of the library in Marlboro’s unique learner-centered curriculum
• Ability to consistently articulate and communicate the library’s mission and priorities and to implement new services and strategic directions compatible with that mission and the mission of Marlboro College.
• Ability to provide leadership in the planning, implementation, and assessment of library services and programs, in consultation with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni.
• Demonstrated library administrative and management experience including advocacy, budgeting, collection development, resource sharing, and personnel.
• Ability to assess information resources and technological applications that support and enhance library instruction, research, and services.
• Knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communication and librarianship including information literacy, copyright, plagiarism, licensing, intellectual freedom, privacy, interlibrary loan, open access, and systems/technology issues.
• A record of service to the profession

• Interest or experience in teaching information literacy in collaboration with faculty.
• Ability to work successfully within a collaborative and collegial environment and to foster this ability in others.
• Personal integrity that fosters respect from all members of a diverse academic community.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Additional information: The Rice Library recently expanded with the opening of the Aron wing in 2003. It contains two classrooms, a computer laboratory, a multi-media laboratory, areas for group and individual learning, the College Archives, and library collection and technical services spaces. The library is the central, all hours, hub of a vibrant and intimate community of lifelong learners.
The Library collection currently includes over 75,000 volumes as well as access to over 17,000 print and electronic journals. The library is highly regarded on campus and works in direct cooperation with individual faculty members, students, and IT staff.
