Library Professional, Special Collections – Bailey/Howe Library, University of Vermont (Burlington, VT)
Job Overview
Provide collection, public service, and technology support in the
Special Collections Department. Provide technical service for
materials in a range of formats, including manuscripts,
photographs, maps, broadsides, monographs, and serials; provide
reference services and assistance to researchers using Special
Collections, and participate in the creation of resources for the
Special Collections web presence.
Typical Functions
* Provide reference services, assistance, guidance, and instruction
to researchers in Special Collections. Staff reference desk,
provide or assist with other reference services, conduct tours and
orientations for students and members of the general public. May
develop and teach library instruction sessions.
* Assist with creation and updates of content for the Special
Collections web presence.
* Participate in outreach activities including the arrangement of
public events, exhibits, and Friends of Special Collections
activities.
* Assist in the cataloging of Special Collections materials; create
provisional records for range of materials, perform copy
cataloging for monographs and serials and work collaboratively on
special conversion and backlog reduction projects.
* Arrange and describe manuscript collections according to
professional standards and departmental procedures. Implement
preservation rehousing, work with Manuscripts Curator to identify
and address preservation and conservation issues in manuscript
collections, prepare print and electronic finding aids and prepare
catalog records for database.
* Process new acquisitions. Assist in physical acquisition of new
collections to include unload, box, inventory, and shelve new
collections. Create new records in accessions database for
materials and report gifts of significant value to University
Development.
* Assist Manuscripts Curator with manuscript processing plans to
include current processing projects and future processing
priorities. Assess unprocessed manuscript collections to assist in
determining processing priorities. Assist in creation and revision
of processing policies and procedures.
* Provide training for student assistants for selected projects and
monitor work quality.
* Participate in Department planning including the creation and
revision of Department policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications or equivalent combination of education & experience
* Bachelor’s degree and one year of library work experience
required. Ability to work effectively in a team setting; oral and
written communication skills, and experience working with
information technology including standard desktop applications
required. Ability to lift 40 lb boxes required.
