Part-time Library Assistant - Green Mountain College (Poultney, VT)

GREEN MOUNTAIN COLLEGE, an innovative environmental liberal arts college, seeks a part-time Library Assistant. Summer 2008 Opening.

Duties: The Library Assistant is a part-time, 20 hours/week, 10-month position reporting to the Director of Library, Information Technology and Learning Support Services. This position is responsible for Library user access services to include circulation, reserves, current periodicals, stack maintenance, and lost items. This position also participates in providing reference assistance.

Required: Strong organizational and computer skills; experience using library research databases; supervisory experience; flexibility and collegiality.

Preferred: Experience working in a college or university library.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Library Assistant is a part-time, 20 hours/week, 10-month position reporting to the Director of Library, Information Technology and Learning Support Services. This position is responsible for Library user access services to include circulation, reserves, current periodicals, stack maintenance, and lost items. This position also participates in providing reference assistance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate management of Library circulation desk
• Communicate policies and procedures to all Library patrons
• Coordinate annual order and receipt of periodicals and supervise maintenance of collection and claims for lost items
• Responsible for overdue notices and billings for unreturned and lost materials
• Manage Library patron records for students, faculty & staff, community users and alumni
• Process and manage Reserve materials
• In collaboration with the Technical Services Librarian maintain library patron database
• Compile circulation statistics and other statistics documenting Library use

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participate in staffing evening and weekend hours
• Assist in providing support for patrons locating and using Library materials
• Assist with AV/Media requests, reservations and delivery of equipment
• Assist with room reservations in the Library building
• Assist with Library displays and maintaining appearance of library generally

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• With the Public Services Librarian train and supervise the Library Student Assistants in circulation desk procedures and stack maintenance
• Assist in supervision of student Computer Help Desk workers

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Strong demonstrated knowledge of numerous computer applications
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and with a diverse clientele
• Ability to work with both patience and flexibility in a rapidly changing work environment
• Ability to think creatively and when necessary work independently
