Library Director - Rockingham Free Public Library (Bellows Falls, VT)
The Trustees of the Rockingham Free Public Library are seeking a creative and collaborative Director to sustain the Library’s role in the community. In consultation with a 9-member elected Board of Trustees, the Library Director is responsible for the management of all library services and resources, including a staff of 3 full-time and 6 part-time employees; an FY08 operating budget about $300,000; an historic facility, including a small museum. The new Director will work collaboratively with a capable and enthusiastic staff, Friends of the Library, and active community volunteers to ensure ongoing high-quality services adaptable and responsive to growing community needs.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a positive, team-building attitude, community-minded spirit and skills, integrity, a sense of humor, and a genuine interest in people. Excellent and flexible leadership, communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to utilize technological as well as traditional skills to create a culture that promotes positive change and a climate for excellence. Applicants must possess thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public library administration; strategic planning; finance; technology trends; personnel administration; public relations and fundraising. The position requires 3+ years of progressively responsible work in public library administration, an ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree, or equivalent experience.
Salary and benefits: Current full-time salary $37,000-$39,000 with full town benefits.

This job sounds great, but it’s really sad that the salary is so low. I realize the cost of living is low in Vermont, but it’s not that low. This salary is well below what any intelligent librarian would work for, even in Vermont.

I have heard that the library director position might still be open. Is that true, or did applications for the position close at the end of March, as listed above?
