There are so many excellent librarians and trustees in Vermont that it is hard to single out just one of each annually, but there are always ones who are extraordinary and deserved to be recognized statewide. Now is the time for you to think about who VLA should recognize this year at the Vermont Library Association Conference, and nominate those deserving colleagues.

VLA is now accepting nominations for:

1) The 2012 Sarah C. Hagar Award which is for outstanding service in or significant contribution to the field of librarianship in Vermont. Nominees must be working in a Vermont library and a member of VLA.

2) The 2012 Trustee of the Year Award for achievement by a trustee on behalf of his or her library, either during the previous year or during his/her years of service.

For more information about the awards, please see: http://www.vermontlibraries.org/awards

To nominate someone, please send the nominee’s name, the name of his/her library, and a letter explaining why this person should receive the award, along with your name, library telephone number and email address by March 16, 2012 to the committee. If more than one person signs a nominating letter, please designate one signatory as the contact person. Letters of support from community members or colleagues are extremely important as they are very helpful to the committee.

Don’t delay-write that letter today! Questions? Please ask Grace Greene at 828-6954 or email:grace.greene@state.vt.us Electronic submissions are preferred.

The Dorothy Canfield Fisher (DCF) Book Award, Vermont’s children’s choice award for grades 4-8, is a great way to get children reading and talking about excellent books. Founded in 1957, it is the country’s second oldest child-selected book award, and as such has a rich history and outstanding reputation nationally.

There will be two openings on the DCF committee for the upcoming year. This is a great opportunity for someone who loves to read children’s books to meet with others with the same passion for bringing books and children together. Anyone interested in applying should email a letter of interest, a resume and two reviews, one positive and one negative, of children’s books of their choice, to Grace Greene (grace.greene@state.vt.us) by January 27, 2012. The new members will be selected in February, and will begin their duties in the summer. Terms are for three years, with a chance to renew for a second term.

Questions? Please ask.

Nominations are open for the 2011 Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award.

The award invites library users nationwide to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations are being accepted online at atyourlibrary.org/ilovemylibrarian through Sept. 12.

Up to 10 librarians will be selected. Each will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and will be honored at an awards ceremony and reception in New York, hosted by The New York Times, in December.

Over the past three years, 30 librarians from across the country have won the I Love My Librarian Award. Last year, more than 2,000 library users nationwide nominated a librarian. Previous winners have been lauded for starting community gardens, helping students with severe disabilities read classic works of literature, for helping non-traditional students learn new technology to get better jobs and more. For more information on previous winners, visit atyourlibrary.org/ilovemylibrarian.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master’s degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master’s degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award is administered by the Campaign for America’s Libraries, ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians. The Campaign is made possible by ALA’s Library Champions, corporations and foundations.

There are so many excellent librarians and trustees in Vermont that it is always hard to single out just one of each annually, but there are always ones who are truly extraordinary and deserve to be recognized statewide. Now is the time for you to think about who VLA should recognize this year at the Vermont Library Association Conference, and nominate those deserving colleagues.

VLA is now accepting nominations for two awards:

The 2011 Sarah C. Hagar Award which is for outstanding service in or significant contribution to the field of librarianship in Vermont. Nominees must be working in a Vermont library and a member of VLA.

The 2011 Trustee of the Year Award for achievement by a trustee on behalf of his or her library, either during the previous year or during his/her years of service.

To nominate someone, please send the nominee’s name, the name of his/her library, and a letter explaining why this person should receive the award, along with your name, library telephone number and email address by March 11, 2011 to the address below (email or snail mail). If more than one person signs a nominating letter, please designate one signatory as the contact person. Letters of support from community members or colleagues are highly encouraged and very helpful to the committee.

Don’t delay-write that letter today! Questions? Please ask Grace Greene at (802)828-6954 or email: grace.greene@state.vt.us>.
