			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Position Summary and Responsibilities:</p>
<p>The Collections Librarian/Manager of Cataloging and Acquisitions provides leadership in shaping the Middlebury Libraries collections in all formats, supervises the merged Cataloging/Acquisitions workgroup, serves as a lead member of the newly formed Digital Projects Committee, and participates in the LIS liaison program.  This position reports to the Director of Research and Collection Services and oversees a budget of over 2 million dollars within a merged library/IT organization that includes a varied staff of librarians, educational technologists, programmers, web developers, and support staff.</p>
<p><span id="more-2114"></span>Among the varied duties of this position, the Collections Librarian will work closely with librarian and faculty selectors to build an appropriately strong, balanced Library collection; review and negotiate license agreements for online library resources; regularly review collecting policies and assess the collection to withdraw, or unsubscribe to, obsolete or unneeded materials; and pursues collaborative and consortial resource sharing opportunities whenever possible.  The successful candidate will also supervise the cataloging/acquisitions workgroup, and participate in decisions relating to the creation of digital library projects at Middlebury.</p>
<p>Qualifications:</p>
<p>We seek an individual with excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude and enthusiasm for learning who has a MLS, MLIS, or foreign equivalent. An advanced degree in a subject specialty welcomed. Other suitable combinations of education and experience will be considered.  The successful candidate should have substantive experience developing collections in an academic library environment, experience with budget preparation and allocation, knowledge of current and emerging trends within the field of collection development and scholarly communication, and solid communication skills.  Supervisory experience is highly desirable. Knowledge of Innovative Interface’s ERM module preferred.  Experience with library cataloging, acquisitions, and/or digital projects preferred.  Familiarity with one or more of the ten languages (German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Hebrew, or Russian) taught at Middlebury preferred.  Technical skills and a willingness to develop new competencies are required.  Ability to work in a team-oriented environment is crucial.</p>

The Librarian is the library  spokesperson,  promoting the use of the library by all members of the community and  fostering good working relationships with town government and  organizations.  The librarian is hired by and responsible to the Library Board of  Trustees.</p>
<p>30 hrs /wk with benefits.</p>

<p><strong>MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES  AND DUTIES</strong></p>
<p><strong>Service to the community&#8211;</strong>Develop   and maintain services that reflect and respond to the interests and  needs of the town including:</p>
<ul>
<li>Participate in long range planning in conjunction with the Board of Trustees</li>
<li>Collaborate with community groups, local schools, Friends of the Library</li>
<li>Develop procedures for the smooth running of the library</li>
<li>Develop a collection of interesting materials in various formats: print, audio-visual, electronic</li>
<li>Maintain the collection, weeding when needed with input from the Trustees and/or Book Selection Committee</li>
<li>Provide reference, interlibrary loan, readers’ advisory and referral services</li>
<li>Assist patrons to use library materials and technology</li>
<li>Develop programs that appeal to a variety of ages and interests</li>
<li>Develop outreach and other services that extend the library’s reach into the community</li>
<li>Develop and organize displays and exhibits for both adults and children</li>
<li>Promote and publicize the library’s services, activities and resources</li>
<li>Oversee the scheduling and use of the library after hours</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Support and implementation  of library policy</strong>&#8211;Follow policies adopted by the Board of Trustees,   making suggestions for changes as needed:</p>
<ul>
<li>Participate in monthly Board of Trustees meetings</li>
<li>Maintain the policy file, passing policy information to staff and volunteers as  appropriate, answer the public’s questions about policies</li>
<li>Serve as a liaison to the Friends of the Library group</li>
<li>Maintain a working relationship with town government</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Fiscal responsibilities</strong>&#8211;Spend and monitor budgeted funds in a responsible manner as sanctioned by  the Board of Trustees</p>
<ul>
<li>Collaborate with the library treasurer to develop an annual budget for Board of Trustee approval</li>
<li>Assist the trustees to present an annual budget request to the town, answering questions about library expenses as needed</li>
<li>Track expenses throughout the year so that no shortfalls occur</li>
<li>Review and approve invoices before forwarding them to the treasurer for  payment</li>
<li>Receive cash donations, fees and other income</li>
<li>Maintain petty cash account and provide treasurer with monthly accounting</li>
<li>Arrange for the use of the most cost-effective vendors</li>
<li>Assist and promote library fund-raising activities with Trustees or Friends of the Library</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Hiring, supervision and  training staff and volunteers</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Recruit staff and volunteers as needed</li>
<li>Schedule and supervise staff and volunteers</li>
<li>Maintain a procedure manual for staff and volunteers and up-date as needed</li>
<li>Review and revise existing job descriptions and update for Trustee approval</li>
<li>Train all staff and volunteers in appropriate library policy and procedures</li>
<li>Evaluate staff performance at least annually</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Formal Reporting</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Prepare written monthly reports for the Board of Trustees</li>
<li>Collect and analyze library statistics</li>
<li>Complete reports, surveys and requests for information from state and federal library agencies and associations</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Continuing Education</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Attend workshops and conferences related to library needs and inform staff and Board of Trustees of any workshops or meetings that might be of interest to them</li>
<li>Affiliate with the Vermont Library Association and the American Library Association</li>
<li>Stay abreast of developments in the library field for children and adults through current professional journals, Vermont Department of Library publications etc.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Technology</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Ensure the library web page contains relevant, current information</li>
<li>Maintain library computers and offer basic computer and internet training for patrons</li>
<li>Maintain automated circulation system</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Perform other duties the  Board of Trustees deems necessary for the efficient operation of the  library</strong></p>

Howe Library is a leading library in the Upper Valley area, serving the 11,000 citizens of Hanover, which includes Dartmouth College students, as well as residents from many surrounding New Hampshire and Vermont communities.  This busy library circulates more than 300,000 items per year, is open seven days per week, and is well supported by the Town of Hanover and the 501(c)3 Howe Library Corporation.</p>

<p>Reporting the Project Director at the University of Vermont, and in  close collaboration with the state-wide Vermont Digital Newspaper  Project Planning Group, (including colleagues at Vermont Department of  Libraries, the Ilsley Public Library, the Vermont Historical Society)  the Project Librarian will be responsible for the day-to-day  coordination and management of the Vermont Digital Newspaper Project,  including overseeing all selection, technical and administrative  activities, assisting in the design and development of the project web  site, monitoring budget, and managing relationships with external  partners and vendors.</p>
<p><span id="more-1997"></span>RESPONSIBILITIES:</p>
<ul>
<li>Manages project staff and coordinates project workflow.</li>
<li>Trains and supervises the Digital Support Specialist (1 FTE)</li>
<li>Works with the VTDNP Planning Group, Advisory Committee members,  the Library of Congress, partners at other institutions to develop the  Vermont Digital Newspaper Project.</li>
<li>In coordination with the Project Director, assists in managing  the project budget.</li>
<li>Prepares a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the microfilm  duplication, digitization, and optical character recognition</li>
<li>Works with vendors to ensure quality deliverables and negotiate  budgetary issues.</li>
<li>Coordinates assessment of newspaper microfilm quality and  suitability for digitization.</li>
<li>Oversees the selection, digitization, metadata capture, OCR,  workflow control, quality control, and other activities involved in  digitizing historic newspapers.</li>
<li>Develops and maintains tracking system for microfilm and digital  deliverables.</li>
<li>Manages the development of the project website.</li>
<li>Receives and edits title essays (500 words for each title  digitized)</li>
<li>Creates documentation, and maintains complete and accurate  records of all work performed.</li>
<li>Responsible for reporting of microfilm selection data and  digital deliverables fulfillment.</li>
<li>Delivers progress reports on specified semi-annual schedule.</li>
<li>Responds to public, professional and scholarly inquiries.</li>
<li>Other duties as assigned.</li>
</ul>
<p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p>
<p>Master?s degree from an ALA-accredited school or foreign equivalent with  experience and a solid understanding of digitization and/or microfilm  conversion projects, including microfilm inspection and suitability for  digitization, experience with XML and standards-based metadata schemas  (non-MARC and MARC) and principles governing standards in digital  libraries; demonstrated project management experience; supervisory  experience; knowledge of newspapers or serials, and ability to assess  complex relationships between titles; quality control experience;  demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail.  Equally important are  strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work with a  variety of people; flexibility and willingness to shift priorities  according to current needs; a sense of humor; commitment to professional  growth.  Some travel is required.</p>
<p>ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:</p>
<p>This position is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)  grant to begin digitization of Vermont?s microfilmed newspapers. The  Vermont Digital Newspaper Project, a part of the National Digital  Newspaper Program developed by NEH and the Library of Congress, will  digitize 100,000 Vermont newspaper pages between the years of 1836 and  1922 during the two-year grant period. Newspapers digitized as part of  the grant award will be included in the Library of Congress? Chronicling  America database at <a href="http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/" target="_blank">http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov</a></p>
<p>SALARY &amp; APPLICATION INFORMATION:</p>

<p>The University of Vermont Bailey/Howe Library seeks an innovative librarian who understands the changing environment of media and access (circulation, reserve and interlibrary loan) services in an academic library. The position, which reports to the Director of Access, Technology and Media Services, supervises the access and media services units and associated library functions including team building and evaluating staff. As a key member of the access, delivery, media and technology services team, this position supports the development, enhancement, and delivery of innovative services throughout the library, online, and across the university. The Bailey/Howe Library and UVM provide excellent service in a student-centered environment. <p><span id="more-1988"></span><strong>RESPONSIBILITIES:</strong></p>

<li> Oversees management of the services provided by the Media and Access units.</li>
<li>Initiates a process in the Media Services unit to modernize workflow and services to students, faculty and staff.</li>
<li>Implements appropriate action steps in the Media and Access units in response to the library-wide strategic plan.</li>
<li>Manages change effectively.</li>
<li>Works collaboratively with the Libraries&#8217; Collection Development team to develop a comprehensive collection development policy for the media collection.</li>
<li>Stays abreast of user needs and trends in academic library media and access services including copyright issues.</li>
<li>Participates in the library liaison program.</li>
<li>Facilitates participatory decision-making within the units.<br />
Works collaboratively with a similar unit in the Dana Medical Library.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li> MLS degree from ALA-accredited program or international equivalent.</li>
<li>Minimum 3 years&#8217; post-MLS professional experience in a library.</li>
<li>Commitment to diversity and inclusion, to be demonstrated in writing in the cover letter and/or CV.</li>
<li>Excellent facilitation, interpersonal relations, and communication skills.</li>

This position is an integral part of the Management Team, and, as such, candidates are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of all library functions, and a commitment to collaboration with other department heads and staff for the development and promotion of the library. The ability to plan and implement short- and long-range goals is essential.  Required are an MLS degree and 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience. The Head of Children’s Services schedules and supervises several part-time staff, and reports directly to the Director.</p>
<p><span id="more-1923"></span>This high energy position is responsible for effective children’s reference services; collection development for pre-literacy through middle school, plus parenting and teacher’s collections; budget management; programming for all ages from early childhood through middle school (working in collaboration with the YA Librarian); and public relations activities, including outreach to the community. Demonstrated knowledge of trends in library services for all ages, technology applications, and effective children’s services techniques is essential.
