The New England Technical Services Librarians (NETSL) Executive Board is committed to promoting and supporting technical services activities in New England http://www.nelib.org/netsl. Board members plan and present the annual NETSL Spring Conference. The Board also develops programs for the New England Library Association, presents the annual NETSL Award for Excellence in Technical Services, and promotes technical services throughout New England and beyond through partnerships with other similar organizations.

Each year NETSL holds elections to fill open positions on the Board. If you are enthusiastic about innovations in technical services, are interested in contributing to regional technical services programming, and would like to have direct input into the direction of NETSL as an organization, consider running for a position on the NETSL Executive Board. Candidates must be NETSL members (via membership in NELA) to serve on the board.

The following positions on NETSL’s 2011-2012 Executive Board are open:

* Corresponding Secretary (one-year term)

* Recording Secretary (one-year term)

* Treasurer (one-year term)

* Vice President/President-Elect (three-year term)

After serving as VP for one year, the VP succeeds to the office of President, then remains a third year on the Board as Past President. The VP must be, or become, a member of the ALCTS division of the American Library Association in addition to being a NETSL member. VP candidates write a personal statement (approximately 150 words) outlining their background and interests, which will be included on the ballot. It is preferable for a VP candidate to have served previously on the NETSL Board.

Terms of office officially begin at the end of NETSL’s annual business meeting, held during the NELA Annual Conference (this year, October 2-4, 2011). The NETSL Board will hold a transition meeting with both current members and incoming members in September 2011.

For additional details about NETSL and the duties of the offices of the Board, visit the NETSL web site: http://www.nelib.org/netsl/bylaws

If you are interested in running for a Board office, please contact Amira Aaron, NETSL President, at a.aaron@neu.edu<mailto:a.aaron@neu.edu> or 617-373-4961by July 15th. Election ballots will go out to the membership in late July.

NETSL is a section of the New England Library Association (NELA) and is affiliated with the ALCTS Council of Regional Groups. Membership in NETSL is open to any member of NELA at no additional cost. For more information on NETSL, visit our website at: http://nelib.org/netsl/

To the New England Library Community:

The New England Library Association is accepting applications for the New England Library Leadership Symposium (NELLS.) NELLS is an intensive one-week leadership retreat and training, which will be held August 8-12 at the Rolling Ridge Conference Center in North Andover , Massachusetts .

Who can attend? NELLS students will be library professionals, paraprofessionals, or volunteers (trustees, friends, etc.) in mid-career (3-15 years experience in or with libraries). The attendees may be recommended by someone or may make their own application for this leadership training. Each student must be a member of his or her state association or NELA in order to apply.

What does it cost? The student’s contribution, which may be supported by the student, the student’s institution, or with a scholarship (some State Library Associations are offering scholarships,) is $400 for four nights lodging, all meals, and the program.

What is taught? The curriculum covers the following areas: getting to know your leadership style; interpersonal communication; presentation skills; managing differences; risk taking; the library within the community; using power and influence; understanding libraries as organizational systems; transforming libraries; the leader as a catalyst for change; the leader’s role as coach and mentor; and achieving your potential. Attendees develop an action plan for their future commitments.

How do I apply? Go to the NELA website at www.nelib.org and download the NELLS application. It is a fairly simple application, and also requires references. Applications are due May 17, 2011.

NELLS is supported by the New England Library Association, The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the Connecticut Library Association, Maine Library Association, the Massachusetts Library Association, the New Hampshire Library Association and the Vermont Library Association.

For more information or to download an application, please go to the NELA website at www.nelib.org . You may also contact NELLS Co-Chairs for more information:

We are excited to have Jackson Gillman coming to the NELA Conference (cosponsored by VLA) in Burlington on Monday, October 3. He will be presenting a program on Rudyard Kipling in Vermont.

Jackson wanted me to pass along that while in VT, he would be willing to present programs at Vermont libraries who are interested. If he has more than one program he can also lower the travel costs to libraries.

His web site is: http://www.jacksongillman.com/ if you are interested in contacting him about the many programs in his repertoire.
