VLC 2012: We Want You For Academic Library Pecha Kucha!

WHAT: Sign up to present at The Academic Library Show & Tell Sessions: Pecha Kucha @ the Vermont Library Conference.

WHO: Invitation to people who work in academic libraries: submit an idea to present a pecha kucha session.

(You know you want to). Topics? Think fun, useful, interesting. This is a multiple-speaker event.

WHEN & WHERE: May 22, 2012, Vermont Library Conference, Saint Michael’s College, Colchester, Vermont

HOW: The format: your presentation will consist of 20 powerpoint slides, with each slide allotted 20 seconds for a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

After all the presentations are completed, there will be time left at the end for discussion and questions.

Please email Stacey Knight at sknight3@smcvt.edu with your presentation idea by January 20, 2012!

Enter a Book Cart Drill Team in the Vermont Library Conference This Year!

There something new at the Vermont Library Conference in 2012….drumroll please….a Book Cart Drill Team Competition! Libraries interested in sponsoring a team should contact Jane Napier at jnapier@kellogghubbard.org for the full list of rules and regulations. Not everyone on your team has to be a librarian! Teams must “register” by March 1. Teams will be made up of 4 people and their routine must be set to music not lasting more than 4 minutes. Bookcarts will be provided. The competition starts at 5pm and will be held on campus at St. Michaels. So plan to stay for the fun!

Vermont Library Conference Workshop Proposals Due Nov. 1

Workshop proposals for the 2012 Vermont Library Conference are due to the conference committee by November 1. There is no set theme as of yet, so proposals could be on any topic that might be of interest to academic, public and school librarians. Please send your ideas and proposals to jnapier@kellogghubbard.org Let us know what you’d like to see and we’ll do our best to get it on the schedule!

Vermont Library Conference 2011 Survey Results

The results of the 2011 Vermont Library Conference survey are in. The majority of respondents expressed a desire to keep the schedule the same as this year, including running from 9:00 to 5:00 (66%), the same amount of free time (80%), 75 minute sessions (60%), 30 minute section meetings (62%) and holding the business and section meetings in the early afternoon (63%). When asked if the emphasis on future keynotes should be more informative or entertaining, 65% responded “mix it up year by year.” And in regard to shortening the wait for lunch, a 42% plurality opted for staggering the ending times for morning sessions. (The runner up in that category was 20% for “no change necessary”—those must have been the people at the front of the line!)

In the general comments, one message came through loud and clear—more coffee, more muffins! I hereby personally take responsibility for this year’s muffin shortage. In trying to be a good steward of conference resources, I underestimated people’s morning hunger and ordered too few. So to make that right, if you were thwarted in your desire for a muffin before 9:00 am, I invite you to make an appointment with me to come to campus, and I will walk over to the campus café with you and buy you one. (People who know me know I’m serious!) One to a customer, please.

Vermont Library Conference 2011 – Call for Proposals

We are now accepting proposals for the 2011 VLA Conference. If you have ideas for workshops, please send them to Jane Napier, Conference Chair, at jnapier@kellogghubbard.org All proposals are due to the conference committee by November 1.

The first conference committee meeting will be held Wednesday, September 15 at 6:30 pm. If you would like to serve on the conference committee, please email Jane with your contact info and you will be added to the committee list.

VLC Survey Results

The results of the 2010 Vermont Library Conference survey are in, and the respondents have expressed three clear preferences: continue meeting on a college or university campus (92%), keep the one day format (67%), and no vendor hall (58%). These results will be used in planning future conferences. Thanks to all attendees who responded!

Vermont Library Conference Information

Directions to the Saint Michael’s College campus are available at www.smcvt.edu/directions. Use the South Entrance to campus for easiest access.

Parking is available in the lot between the Durick Library, the McCarthy Arts Center, and the Ross Sports Center. Conference attendees can park in any student, faculty/staff, or visitor space.

Registration materials can be picked up in the Durick Library beginning at 8:00. Note that registration is now closed—there will be no on-site registration.

Lunch in the Green Mountain Dining Hall is included in the cost of registration—just show your conference badge at the door. VLA Section business meetings will take place during lunch. A tour of the Books in Bloom Teaching Garden will be offered at 12:15.

Wireless access is available in all conference venues. Connection to the SMC Guest network requires certification of virus protection software.

Computer access will be available in the Durick Library throughout the day.

LAST CALL for Nominations for Vermont Library Association Awards for 2010

There are so many fabulous librarians and trustees in Vermont that it is always hard to single out just one of each annually, but there are always ones who are extraordinary and deserved to be recognized statewide. Now is the time for you to think about who VLA should recognize this year at the Vermont Library Conference, and nominate those deserving colleagues.

The 2010 Sarah C. Hagar Award which is for outstanding service in or significant contribution to the field of librarianship in Vermont. Nominees must be working in a Vermont library and a member of VLA.

The 2010 Trustee of the Year Award for achievement by a trustee on behalf of his or her library, either during the previous year or during his/her years of service.

To nominate someone, please send the nominee’s name, the name of his/her library, and a letter explaining why this person should receive the award, along with your name, library telephone number and email address by March 12, 2010 to the address below. If more than one person signs a nominating letter, please designate one signatory as the contact person. Letters of support from community members or colleagues are very helpful to the committee.
