Overview
The State of Vermont seeks to fill the position of State Librarian to provide vision and leadership for the diverse functions of the State library agency and library services statewide. The State Librarian reports to the Secretary of Administration and serves as administrative head of the Department of Libraries, with a staff of 33 full-time employees and an overall operating budget of $3.7 million. The State Librarian serves as president of the Vermont Public Library Foundation, Inc. and as secretary to the State Board of Libraries, a citizen advisory board appointed by the Governor.

General Job Description
The State Librarian develops and implements the Department’s long range plan under the Federal Library Services and Technology Act and oversees the Department’s budget which includes federal, state, and special funds. The Department provides library and information services to the three branches of state government, libraries statewide, the general public, and Vermonters with special needs. It also promotes excellence in local libraries through training and technical assistance and fosters statewide cooperation and resource sharing among all types of libraries.

Minimum Qualifications
This position requires a master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association-accredited institution. Candidates will be expected to have at least five years of progressively responsible library management experience as a director of a major library system, responsible management experience in a state library agency, or a large library, or other similar related professional experience. Grants and contract management experience, knowledge of integrated library systems and information technology resources as they apply to libraries, and experience with the legislative process are desirable.

Working Conditions
Duties are performed in a office or library setting. Job related travel is required. Private means of transportation may be necessary for required travel. Evening and weekend overtime may be required for library related functions. Travel may be necessary in all types of weather.
