Acquisitions Specialist – Dartmouth College Library (Hanover, NH)

Position Purpose

The Acquisitions Specialist uses data management tools and techniques to optimize acquisitions and collection data. Works extensively with vendors and the library management system to ensure that collection data is accurate and up to date. To help decision makers in building and managing the collection, retrieves and analyzes data, and effectively communicates results and analysis to relevant stakeholders. Assesses current processes and workflows and coordinates improvements. Responds to collection queries from patrons and staff, provides timely, accurate information, and addresses any underlying issues.

Key Accountabilities

  • Uses data management tools and techniques to ensure that collection information in the library management system and other acquisitions systems is accurate and current. Follows vendor updates and changes, makes necessary adjustments to local systems, and communicates significant changes to stakeholders. – 30%
  • Collects, analyzes, and disseminates relevant collection data from vendors and from library systems. Effectively communicates findings to selectors and other library staff to inform collection development decisions. – 30%
  • Analyzes and assesses department workflows and processes and implements updates using continuous improvement methods. – 20%
  • Responds to inquiries and reported resource access problems from the Dartmouth community and works to resolve underlying issues. – 15%
  • Engages in professional development activities. – 5%

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree and three to five years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and technical problem solving skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex and changing digital environment.
  • Familiarity with Excel, and ability to self-learn additional statistical and/or other applications.
  • Familiarity and experience with library resources such as journals, databases, and monographs.
  • Familiarity and experience with library management systems.
  • Customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and one to three years of relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis using software such as R, SPSS, or Stata.
  • Familiarity with Alma.
  • Two to three years relevant library experience preferred and/or customer service experience with a diverse clientele.
