Membership FAQ

We’re moving to Wild Apricot membership software in 2020. It’s a little different from how VLA membership has operated in the past. Here are a few questions answered to help you get started. Any other questions, just drop us an email. We’re here to help!

How do I sign up?

You can click the “Join or Renew” link under the membership menu on the VLA website or go to From there, you can log in and renew your existing membership.
If you previously had a membership, we should have your details. You can click “Forgot password” to get a password set up. If you did not have a previous VLA membership you can click the Join VLA link in the menu bar and fill out the form.

How can I pay?

You can pay through Wild Apricot using any major credit card. Wild Apricot can also send you an invoice via email, and you can pay that by check or PayPal.
If you are paying by check, please make sure you include a list of all the people you are paying for, their membership level, and any add-ons they might have. You can pay via PayPal by using PayPal’s “send money” tool and sending money to Please include your invoice number with your payment.

Will my membership auto-renew?

Memberships are set to auto-renew. You can cancel this at any time from your profile page (at this link) by clicking the large green “Stop recurring payments” button. Please note if you have a “pending” account, you will not see this option until your membership is paid for.

What do the membership levels mean?

The descriptions are in small type underneath the membership level names. Here is what they all mean.

  • Birch – salary $10,000 or less
  • Aspen  – salary between $10,001 and $20,000
  • Maple  – salary $20,001 or greater
  • Linden – non-employed member
  • Ash – retired member
  • Cedar – trustee or friend member
  • Sugar Maple – ALA/VLA Joint Student Member

How do I change to a different membership level?

This is a two step process:

  1. If you have a recurring payment set up, first cancel it from your profile page.
  2. Once you’ve done that, you should see a “change” link next to your membership level. Select a new level and complete the process.

Please note that you can’t manually add yourself to a “bundled” account. Contact us if you’d like some help with that.

Do memberships still go from January through December?

No! Wild Apricot allows us to having rolling membership. People who join partway through the year or who sign up for new memberships will have their membership start on the day we receive payment. All existing VLA memberships were set to expire at the end of 2019. If you paid for membership in late 2019 and would like us to adjust your renewal date, please email

How do I manage my library’s group membership?

People who sign up to manage an organizational “bundle” membership  will be able to add people to their organizational “bundle” via the Wild Apricot website. However, if you want to add a person who already has a membership profile, they will have to be added by an administrator (just this first year while we get set up). How does the ALA/VLA Student membership work?

To take advantage of joint VLA/ALA membership, you can sign up for a Sugar Maple level account with VLA at no charge and then go to this page on the ALA website to complete your membership application and pay.

What else does this software do?

There is an online, members-only, membership directory. You can manage your own address and contact information changes from the website. You can print out a VLA membership card. You can indicate interest in mentoring or volunteering. If you are the head of a committee or section, you can keep track of and easily email all the members of your group. In the future we can use Wild Apricot to manage conference registration and/or create an online store. Here are their help pages, feel free to look around.

Can I access these features from my phone?

Yes! Wild Apricot has a mobile app which allows you to do almost all membership tasks (except account renewal, sorry!) from a mobile device.
