Membership FAQ

VLA moved to Wild Apricot membership software in 2020. The following FAQs will guide you.

How do I join or renew my membership?

Click the “Join or Renew” link under the membership tab on the VLA website navigation bar (look above).

Or, go directly to https://vermontlibraries.wildapricot.org. From Wild Apricot, log in to renew your existing membership, or click the Join VLA link in the menu bar if you are new to membership. Click “Forgot password” for password help.

How do I register an Organizational “Bundle” Membership?

One person from the organization should apply for the Organizational “Bundle” Membership.  It should be a library staff member for Library Organization Staff bundle; a friends member for the Friends Group bundle; a board member for the Board of Trustees bundle, etc. Please note, you cannot manage more than one bundle. You cannot manage a bundle and have an individual membership.

As the bundle administrator, complete the Organizational “Bundle” Membership form with your information, and indicate the total number of NELA extended memberships you are purchasing for the organization in the slot marked NELA Memberships.  Once you, as the bundle administrator, submit the membership application, you will receive an invoice that includes the total for the group membership AND the number of NELA memberships you have chosen.

Now it is time to add members to your bundle.  Log into your bundle administrator account, scroll down to “Bundle Summary,” click on the green box labeled ADD MEMBER, and input the name and email of that member. Return to your profile by clicking the “return to bundle list and your own profile” link, and repeat this procedure for each member of your bundle.  New bundle members can have different join dates but will share a single renewal date.

As bundle administrator, you can input all the information for each member.  Or, you can ask each member to log into their account to add their address and the sections in which they would like to participate. When the member inputs their email from the login page, they can click on “Forgot Password” in order to set their password.

How can I pay?

You can pay through Wild Apricot using any major credit card. You can also request that Wild Apricot email you an invoice, which you can pay by check or PayPal. If you are paying by check, please include a list of all the people you are paying for, their membership levels, and if they are joining NELA.

When paying with PayPal, use their “send money” tool. Send the payment to vermontlibrariestreasurer@gmail.com. Please include your invoice number with your payment. Please feel free to send money questions to vermontlibrariestreasurer@gmail.com

Will my membership auto-renew?

Membership is set to automatically renew each year on the date of your membership purchase. You can cancel this at any time from your profile page (at this link) by clicking the large green “Stop recurring payments” button. If you have a “pending” account, you will not see this option until you pay for your membership.

What are the membership levels?

Individual Memberships

  • Birch – $25 – Salary of $10,000 or less.
  • Aspen – $35 – Salary between $10,001 and $20,000.
  • Maple – $50 – Salary of $20,001 or greater.
  • Linden – $25 – Non-employed member.
  • Ash – $25 – Retired member.
  • Cedar – $25 – Trustee or Friend member.
  • Sugar Maple – Variable – Student VLA/ALA joint member.

Organizational “Bundle” Memberships

  • Library Organization Staff – $50
  • Friends Group – $50
  • Board of Trustees – $50
  • Other Non-Profit – $50
  • For-Profit Organization – $100

How do I change to a different membership level?

This is a two-step process:

  1. If you have a recurring payment set up, first cancel it from your profile page.
  2. Once you’ve done that, you should see a “change” link next to your membership level. Select a new level and complete the process.

Please note that you can’t manually add yourself to an organizational “bundle” account. Contact the membership chair at members@vermontlibraries.org for help with this.

When does membership expire?

Wild Apricot allows us to have rolling membership, which means renewal occurs annually on the date of your payment (versus the first of the year). (All existing VLA memberships were set to expire at the end of 2019, when we transferred to online software.)

How do I register for the NELA Extended Membership?

VLA members are eligible to join the New England Library Association (NELA) at a reduced rate of $20 annually per person ($15 for VLA’s INDIVIDUAL student, retiree, friend, trustee, or unemployed membership categories). When you join VLA or renew your individual membership on Wild Apricot, choose the “NELA Extended Membership” box and the additional $20 (or $15) will be added to your account.  Those managing an organizational “bundle” membership should choose the total number of NELA Extended Memberships they want for their group in the NELA Memberships slot on the Wild Apricot form, then email the names of those people to the membership chairperson at members@vermontlibraries.org

How does the ALA/VLA Student membership work?

Qualifying students enrolled in MLS/MLIS, CAEP, and LTA programs are eligible for the American Library Association’s (ALA)/VLA joint membership at the special student rate. Register for VLA’s Sugar Maple level at no charge, and then complete ALA’s Joint Student Membership Program Application, paying there.

What else does the Wild Apricot software do?

There is an online, members-only, membership directory. You can manage your contact information changes, print your VLA membership card, and indicate your interest in mentoring or volunteering.

If you are a committee or section leader, you can keep track of and easily email all the members of your group.

In the future, VLA can use Wild Apricot to manage conference registration and create an online store. Here are their help pages, feel free to look around.

Can I access these features from my phone?

Yes! Download the Wild Apricot mobile app, from which you can do almost all membership tasks (except account renewal, sorry!) from a mobile device.
