Major duties include professional development instruction for Vermont public library staff and trustees; collaboration with partner organizations and state agencies on issues related to public libraries, including policy development and trainings; consulting on topics including municipal and non-profit operations, building management, budget and finance, strategic planning, community relations, and library boards. This consultant will serve as a lead in conference planning for library trustees and friends and will develop trainings and web-based content for library staff and trustees. The Library Consultant for Library Operations will be responsible for convening various library networking groups.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in library science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association AND three (3) years or more of post-degree library experience.

OR

Master’s degree or higher in related field AND three (3) years or more of library leadership or non-profit governance/policy leadership experience.

AND

Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, board management, policy development, training, or non-profit management.

Strong written and verbal communication skills. The ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications

Public library experience.

Experience in library administration including supervision of staff.

Library Consultant for Special Populations – Vermont Department of Libraries (Barre, VT)

The Vermont Department of Libraries seeks a skilled, collaborative, and innovative librarian to serve as Library Consultant for Special Populations. The successful candidate will provide consulting and professional development activities with a focus on special populations, which include, but are not limited to Veterans, LGBTQ+, seniors, new Americans, people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, are incarcerated or in state care. The Library Consultant for Special Populations oversees the ABLE Library (formerly the Library for the Blind & Physically Disabled) and manages the local recording program for visually and physically disabled citizens. They also plan, implement and evaluate ADA and adult literacy programs and manage library services to state institutions. The Consultant works with the National Library Service (NLS), a citizen Advisory Council, and with partner organizations that serve the disabled and adult learners. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to conducting outreach and public relations and supervision of two or more employees at the ABLE Library.

This job calls for a well-organized individual who will represent the Department in statewide partnerships and initiatives, apply research-based planning, program development, and assessment, and use current library trends to advance local library services. ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, experience serving special populations. Statewide travel required.
