GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Audio Visual Assistant, under the supervision of the school librarian, oversees daily operations of scheduling and maintaining equipment for maximal use in instructional programs. The Audio Visual Assistant catalogues and processes all AV software and maintains the AV component of the library’s bibliographic database to insure indexes to audio-visual material.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  2. Effective word processing skills; knowledge of technology applications; and basic skills in operation/maintenance of AV Equipment.
  3. Flexibility in dealing with multiple tasks, people, and material resources.
  4. Previous experience and/or ability working with children or adolescents.
  5. Experience and desire to learn library automation skills, cataloguing, other related skills.
  6. Commitment to the School District’s mission and Strategic Plan.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develops and administers circulation systems and storage areas for audio visual equipment, supplies, and educational software.
  2. Conducts and maintains AV equipment software, and materials inventory. Also recommends ordering consumables, and other needed equipment/software purchases to the librarian.
  3. Aids and instructs teachers and students in the operation of equipment; reports emerging trends to the librarian.
  4. Troubleshoots classroom equipment problems and provides or arranges for equipment repair, as needed.
  5. Marks and labels all new equipment with school name, inventory number, and/or department. Creates and maintains maintenance history sheets on each piece of equipment.
  6. Sets up videotaping schedule for satellite/cable programs requested by teachers. Ensures that the library complies with copyright laws when copying educational programming.
  7. Catalogues and processes new AV material in accordance with Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules II. Enters cataloguing data into library’s database.
  8. Supervises the operation of the library when the librarian is not present.
  9. Performs other tasks as requested by the Librarian and/or Building Administrators.

Reference Librarian – Northfield Mount Hermon (Gill, MA)

The Schauffler Library is at the heart of campus and occupies an important physical and virtual space at NMH. The Adjunct Reference Librarian position plays a key role in the Library team and has the opportunity to work one-on-one with students engaged in scholarly activities.

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks a dynamic self-starter to work at the library’s reference desk and provide research, citation and technology assistance to students. This position will cover the circulation desk as needed; coordinate the work of student assistants during assigned shifts; provide an adult presence and help to oversee study hall in the evening; and other projects as assigned.

The successful applicant will have a Master’s degree in library science or equivalent experience and at least one year’s experience providing reference assistance and public services in a library. We will consider outstanding candidates who have not yet received their degrees but have completed core reference and technology coursework. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively with colleagues and other members of the community.

Candidates are expected to have experience in equity and inclusion work that supports a diverse community in a boarding school environment. They should also have a demonstrated interest in making a positive impact on the lives of adolescents.

This position runs the academic year, through May 2022, with the option to renew for the following academic year. The schedule will consist of two evening shifts per week (Mondays plus an additional day to be determined), the Sunday evening shift, attending the weekly team meeting, and project work.
