Outreach and Programming Manager – Bixby Memorial Free Library (Vergennes, VT)

The Bixby is excited to announce an opening for an innovative, resourceful, and effective team player to lead our Outreach and Programming efforts. We hope to find someone who loves the role and potential of libraries, who is inspired to use their creativity, enthusiasm, and strong background in branding and experiential marketing (events and programming) to bring to life all that we have to offer for our five-town Champlain Valley Vermont community.

Position Summary: The Bixby Outreach and Programming Manager is responsible for managing the marketing and public relations for The Bixby as well as creating and supporting high-quality programming and events to expand the reach, usage, appreciation, and support of the resources and offerings of The Bixby for the people of our five-town rural Vermont community.

The position is part-time at 30 hours per week at a rate of $20 to $22 per hour, commensurate with experience. Do take a look at the sections below for all ways that the Bixby and our community could be a great fit for you.

Essential Job Functions:

Develops and implements effective programming, events, outreach, and exhibits to increase and expand the relevance and utilization of Bixby offerings with primary responsibility for adults and families, additionally supporting children and teens. 30%

Develops, implements, and evaluates marketing and communications strategies, content, and public relations to grow The Bixby’s reach, appreciation, and support. 25%

Plans, manages, and evaluates innovative and effective community-building, recognition, and fundraising events. 15%

Provides staff support for volunteers, patrons, and visitors at the Circulation Desk – 15%

Fosters and nurtures collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations to expand reach and support. 5%

Attracts, supports, and celebrates talented volunteers to help achieve Bixby goals and address needs. 5%

Performs similar or related work as required. 5%

Education

  • BA or BS required
  • Advanced degree and/or Master’s of Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent experience/certification desired
  • Certificate in Public Librarianship from the Vermont Department of Libraries (or intent to pursue.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Familiarity, passion for, and/or professional experience in a public library setting and the role and importance of public libraries preferred
  • Demonstrated results in creating engaging, successful programming and event management
  • Current hands-on marketing and creative expertise, including web, social, experiential, word-of-mouth, visual, email
  • Attention to detail; excellent written and verbal skills; effective public speaking
  • Care, compassion, and ability to relate to others
  • Positive, can-do team player and collaborator
  • Strong sense of humor, resourcefulness, and resiliency

Physical Requirements: Work is performed under typical library and office conditions. Duties require intermittent light to moderate physical effort in carrying, lifting, or moving lightweight materials or equipment.

The Bixby Memorial Free Library is an incorporated non-profit that serves and is supported by a rural five-town community in the historic and scenic Champlain Valley of Vermont. The Bixby staff, board, and volunteers are honored to steward a wide range of resources for our community:

Program Assistant – Deborah Rawson Memorial Library (Jericho, VT)

Program Assistant to help with Youth and Adult Programming 15 hours /week, 16.50 an hour.

We are looking for a public library enthusiast who enjoys working with people of all ages, is detail oriented, creative, and likes a variety of tasks.  The assistant will be responsible for making and distributing flyers both in print and online, creating the monthly newsletter and calendar of events, assisting with youth programs, planning/attending adult programs, working the circulation desk Thursdays from 10-12 and other duties as needed.

Extra hours may be available at the circulation desk as a substitute.

Your time must be flexible to include possible day, weeknight and weekends.  Your schedule will be known a month in advance.

Skills:

  • Have technical abilities to use computers, including running a Zoom meeting room,
  • Have knowledge of how to use Mail Chimp, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, WordPress and Publisher.
  • Have social media skills to use Facebook and Instagram.
  • Have excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills.
